Prof Neelam’s and Prof Hegde’s book “Textbook of Physics” Volume-1 in Mechanics is a great book for students aspiring to master problem solving for JEE, Olympiads and similar exams. The book also offers concise yet sufficient theory. There are a good number of carefully chosen problems – both solved and unsolved, to bring a student’s level up to and even slightly beyond JEE Advanced. In the book, the authors explain difficult concepts well; the Calculus part used is precise and meaningful, and it is clear that the authors have taken a genuine interest to guide the reader through advanced problem solving techniques and offered solutions that are quite original, innovative and to-the-point. Great to see such seasoned educators in creative action! Arvind Chauhan (mentor to 14 JEE Advanced top 10 AIRs)

Book Preface

Welcome to the fascinating world of physics! This book is designed to help you understand the fundamental concepts of physics and their practical applications in everyday life. It is specifically tailored to the needs of students in the XI and XII standard who aspire to seek admission to prestigious engineering and medical colleges. It will prepare them for the challenges of the entrance examinations.

As a subject that deals with the study of matter, energy, and their interactions, physics is a branch of science that has contributed significantly to our understanding of the world around us. From the motion of planets to the behaviour of subatomic particles, physics helps us understand the fundamental laws that govern the universe.

In this book, we have covered a wide range of topics of mechanics. Each chapter is structured to provide a clear insight into the concepts, followed by examples and exercises that will help you reinforce your understanding. We have also included real-life examples and applications of physics principles, which will help you understand how physics is relevant in our daily lives. Whether you’re interested in pursuing a career in physics or simply want to understand the world around you better, this book will provide you with a solid foundation to the subject.

Various problems are highlighted within each section. The simpler straightforward problems appear in the beginning, followed by problems of increasing difficulty levels. We have also included a few challenging problems, marked with asterisk. The purpose of these problems is obviously to assess how robust is the students’ grasp on the topic. Deeper conceptual intricacies are driven home better by such examples.

Calculus is introduced gradually, keeping in mind that a course in calculus is often taken concurrently. Most steps are shown after the basic equations are developed. Vector products are introduced later in the text, only where they are needed in physical applications. The dot product is introduced in Chapter 7, (Work and Energy). The cross product is introduced in Chapter 10, which deals with rotational dynamics. The international system of units (SI) is used throughout the text.

We have not provided answers to a few straightforward problems in exercises. We expect students to arrive at the correct answer themselves. This has been done with the intention of building confidence in problem solving.

It is always useful to jot down points that are not clear to you. Keep in mind that few students are able to absorb the full meaning of the text in just one reading. Several readings of the text are needed to clarify difficult concepts. Memorizing passages from a text, equations, and derivations does not necessarily mean you understand the material. Avoid rote learning.

We thank S Kalyan Dutt, IIT Delhi, for contributing significantly in framing examples and exercises for several chapters. We will be failing in our duty if we do not acknowledge the efforts of Srija Anand, IIIT Delhi and Aravind Udupa, IIT Delhi for painstakingly going through the draft, suggesting corrections and modifications. We owe our sincere thanks to Dipesh Kumar Aarya for beautifully typesetting the book. Heartfelt gratitude to each one of you who contributed directly or indirectly in making this book to see the light of the day.
